Although geographically located in the northeast or I-San, Loei has many things in common with thenorthern region – namely its numerous high hills and mountains and itswintry as well as foggy climate. Literally speaking, the provincedeserves its name “Loei” which means ‘beyond’ or ‘to the furthestextreme’ as Loei lies in the northernmost part of the Northeasternregion. Most notable is that Loei is the only province in Thailandwhere the temperature can drop to as low as zero Celsius in winterwhile it can become hotter than any province during summer. In short,Loei’s geography and climate is unique when compared to other I-Sanprovinces.

Theprovince has long been a favourite destination for nature lovers, mostof whom come to scale the famous mesa mountain Phu Kradueng. The othertwo of Loeiωs triple lofty treats are Phu Luang, within whose rangelies a wildlife reserve, and Phu Rua. Best time to go is November toApril.
Hikingtrails on the summit of Phu Kradueng lead through changing landscapes, from flower dotted meadows to pine forests to waterfalls. The mountainis part of a national park and a natural habitat for rare orchids, birds and wildlife including the tailed turtle, or Tao Pulu
PhuLuang, nicknamed \"Emerald of the Northeast\" is known for itsbiodiversity. A wide array of wild orchids, ferns and wildflowers makehiking along its trails a delight.
Phu Rua, or Mount Boat,is marked by a landscape of sandstone cliffs and oddly shapedformations created by wind and rains. The hiking trails are relativelyeasy. From the peak, you have a view of the Mekong, a natural borderbetween Thailand and Laos.
